NEW YEAR'S EVE

GETTING OFF TO A GOOD START

No plans for New Year's Eve? Here are a few ideas if you don't mind traveling a bit:

• New York: The Tribeca Grand in Manhattan replicates the original Times Square ball drop in its eight-story atrium, and since the party's in the hotel's snug Church Lounge, you won't even get cold watching it. The ball (pictured above) is a replica of the one used in 1953. General admission is $149 or $249 with dinner. Info at www.tribecagrand.com or 212-519-6600.

• Atlanta: The 18th annual Georgia Peach Drop festivities begin at noon Dec. 31 at Underground Atlanta. The show includes children's activities, live music, fireworks and -- best of all -- it's free. Info at www.peachdrop.com or 404-523-2311.

• Alabama: Every New Year's Day, devoted fans of Hank Williams (senior, not junior) gather in Montgomery to commemorate his passing, first at Oakwood Cemetery, and then at the Hank Williams Museum. Williams, who was 29 when he died on Jan. 1, 1953, remains one of the most influential voices in country music. Info: www.thehankwilliamsmuseum.com or 334-262-3600.

• Australia: Melbourne's massive Summadayze electronic music festival still has some tickets available for $100. The Jan. 1 show features DJ sets from Basement Jaxx, Bob Sinclair, Mylo, Judge Jules and Darren Emerson. Info: www.inthemix.com.au/whatson/event/33371/summadayze--2007.

• Italy: The Umbria Jazz Winter Festival in Orvieto, which runs Dec. 28 through Jan. 1, includes a New Year's Eve dinner and outdoor concerts after midnight. There's funk, zydeco and blues, but the focus of the festival is Italian jazz. There are several free shows. Ticket prices range from $18 to $238 for the grand New Year's Eve dinner. COSTA RICA
IT'S A WILD, WILD LIFE

Wilderness Inquiry, which promotes adventure travel for people of all ages and abilities, is planning two 10-day trips to southern Costa Rica early next year. Guests will travel to the private reserve Hacienda Baru, Mount Chirripo National Park and the Corcovado National Park Preserve on the Osa Peninsula -- a place that the National Geographic Society calls ''the most biologically intense place on Earth'' -- to see whales, monkeys, iguanas, sloths, birds, frogs and, with any luck, jaguars.

And while a wild time is guaranteed for all, Wilderness Inquiry promises that the accommodations in small local hotels come with comfortable beds and hot showers.
Details: Wilderness Inquiry specializes in providing appropriate staff support and adapted equipment so people with disabilities can fully participate alongside people who do not have disabilities.

The all-inclusive trips, Jan. 26-Feb 4 and Feb. 10-19, cost $1,945.
Complete itinerary and other info at www.wildernessinquiry.org or 800-728-0719.
