A course record-equalling first round of six under par 65 handed England’s Robert Dinwiddie the early advantage at the Kai Fieberg Costa Rica Open 2007. The 24 year old leads the Argentine duo of Sebastian Fernandez and Eduardo Argiro by a single stroke at the Cariari Country Club.
Dinwiddie, who turned professional in September, put together a highly impressive opening score that contained seven birdies and just a single dropped shot to record the best opening round in the tournament’s six year history.
For the past four of those six years, the Kai Fieberg Costa Rica Open has been a joint-sanctioned event between the Challenge Tour and the Tour de Las Americas.
Many of the European players in the field have visited the Cariari Country Club in the past four seasons, and that fact was borne out by the presence of a number of European players in the upper echelons of the first round leaderboard.
Italy’s Alessio Bruschi and Frenchman Olivier David carded a pair of four under par 67s, while Niki Zitny of Austria and Italy’s Paulo Terrini posted respective scores of three under 68 and two under 69.
No-one could catch Dinwiddie though, and the Englishman was delighted with his start to the tournament.
He said: “I played pretty steady golf all the way around, giving myself quite a lot of chances and managing to cope with the grain on the greens quite well. “You know, maybe going out early, the greens weren't quite as severe and that possibly helped me.”
The 2005 Tennessee State University graduate, who represented Great Britain and Ireland at the 2005 Walker Cup, began his round on the tenth tee, making birdies at the 12th, 13th and 14th. After making his only bogey of the day at the par three 17th, he went back to three under by sinking a ten foot putt for birdie at the first.
“I got stuck on three under for the next few holes, but then I chipped in for birdie on the fifth which was a little bit of a boost, and from there I had a strong finish with birdies on the seventh and eight. I’m obviously very happy with the score.”
