"Greaseball Rally" slides into town at the Hard Rock Cafe

By JOHN BOAN
For The Tennessean

"Fill it up, son. Ten gallons of high-test grease."

That's not quite what the organizers have in mind.

The Hard Rock Café in Nashville is hosting the first-ever “Greaseball Challenge” today to promote the use of alternative fuel sources.

No, it's not an April Fools joke.

As part of the event, four “Greaseball” teams are driving from Washington, D.C. to Costa Rica using cars that have been converted to run on vegetable oil.

The cars are making a stop in Nashville today to refuel on excess waste grease from the café. The rally will then move on to Memphis and Mexico City before finishing in Costa Rica.

“It was kind of a perfect fit since we had cafes all along the route,” said Vilma Salinas, the sales and marketing representative for Hard Rock Café Nashville.

And since cold fusion hasn't quite been perfected, much less really discovered, biofuel has emerged as one of the better alternatives to dwindling supply of oil-based fuels.

The event begins at 2:30 p.m. with guests having the opportunity to meet and talk with drivers. The cars will be refueled at 3 p.m. and are scheduled to leave at 3:45 p.m.

Donations will be accepted at every leg of the journey, and proceeds will go to help developing countries implement small-scale biofuel projects.
