CAP: Keeping Costa Rica Communities Safe

CAP, the acronym for Crime Awareness and Prevention, maintains strategic partnerships with both local and municipal law enforcement agencies, as well as volunteers and active members, to lower crime in Costa Rica dramatically. A prime example of CAP’s success is the last Envision Festival, in which only a single home robbery occurred.

Thanks to the success of CAP, home and business owners, citizens, and tourists feel more secure within their environment. The efforts led by CAP bring more support to communities, creating a barrier against criminal action. Ongoing involvement with various local organizations, including the Costa Ballena region, have made communities safer and, therefore, more enjoyable. CAP involvement has also led to a greater number of criminal convictions.

When living, working, or visiting Costa Rica, there is a sense of peace in knowing that CAP members are banded together to make you less of a target. Unfortunately, crime is everywhere, but there is no reason that you have to sit back and become a victim. With CAP, people in the community have more knowledge of and control over things that go on. For current home and business owners, as well as those thinking about buying property in Costa Rica, this speaks volumes.

Within the past 18 months, the organization has become stronger and more effective in its fight against crime. CAP has been instrumental in making people feel safe in their own homes and businesses. Another advantage of CAP is that a greater number of criminals are being convicted. Because of that, poor influences on youth have diminished.

However, for long-term success in keeping Costa Rica communities safe, the younger population needs to be properly educated. With knowledge, youth have the opportunity to steer clear of crime, instead becoming productive within the community. While education is essential, it also requires time and money. The good news is that with CAP support, this mission can be fulfilled.

Regardless if you currently work or live in Costa Rica or are planning to purchase property sometime in the future, security is of the utmost importance. Whether you are a resident, citizen, or tourist, you have the right to feel safe and secure. When the level of crime decreases, the economy is boosted and property values increase.

If you are interested in becoming a member of CAP, you can purchase either a personal or a business membership for just $100 a year. That means for roughly $8 each month, you will receive updates from CAP via email, as well as a CAP car decal, helpful tips for crime prevention, and a membership plaque to proudly display in your home or business. In addition, there is access to an online directory that contains the names and/or businesses of all members.

If there are specific CAP programs that you feel strongly about, additional donations can be made directly. There are several unique programs, as listed below. Each program has been successful and continues because of the extra support that members provide.

• New and renovated police stations located in Ojochal, Dominical, and Uvita
• Stronger police presence during Costa Rica festivals
• CSS Program, which consists of security cameras being strategically placed to capture crimes as they occur and prevent homes and businesses from becoming targets
• Community Awareness involves different social events for building a stronger bond between police and citizens
• Improved communication among various police forces
• Education for public awareness and crime prevention

These programs were designed to keep home and business owners, citizens, and tourists safe while sending a clear message to criminals that the region of Costa Ballena will not tolerate crime.

To live and work in a safe community, it is important to support the efforts of CAP. Simply send an email to caponcrime@gmail.com, and a CAP representative will collect your membership donation and drop off your car decal or business plaque. If preferred, you can make the membership donation via PayPal using the same email, caponcrime@gmail.com.

Your support to a very worthy cause is greatly appreciated. By becoming a member, you support the CAP mission that assures safety and security for every law-abiding resident, citizen, and tourist coming to Costa Rica by building and unifying communities, as well as promoting public awareness and crime prevention. As a member of CAP, you are a valued and highly respected voice in making this country a safer place.
