Costa Rica Continues Commitment to Sustainability in Tourism

Pura vida. It's the common greeting that Ticos will typically call out to you in practically any locale in Costa Rica. Pure life. With Costa Rica boasting the leading sustainable ecotourism industry in the world, the greeting is particularly appropriate here.

Possessing the largest density of biodiversity of any country, Costa Rica is completely committed to the study of green economics and building a sustainable destination for visitors from around the world. While there is no doubt that Costa Rica is replete with beautiful destinations, the country takes every effort possible to continue a tradition of sustainability. One of the ways in which the country continues to promote sustainability and ecotourism is by granting Touristic Sustainability Certificates to companies. The certificates are granted by the Costa Rican Board of Tourism based on a set of rigid criteria.

One of the first parameters to be evaluated is the interaction that exists between the company in question and the environment. Such interaction might include a policy toward environmental protection, sustainability programs, etc.

Additionally, the Board will consider the company's infrastructure and services. Of particular interest is the subject of waste management and a policy for the saving of electricity and water.

The actions that are taken by external clients will also be considered in the granting of a certificate. Finally, the Board will consider the interaction of the company with the local community.

As Costa Rica continues to become more widely recognized as the epicenter for sustainable tourism, the future certainly seems bright.
