Costa Rica May Soon Enter Petrocaribe

President Luis Guillermo Solís has given instructions to his officials to draft a report detailing support for Costa Rica to join Venezuela's initiative that provides benefits for the purchase of fuel.

The subject is a timely one as the cost of oil byproducts continues to increase throughout markets around the world. Costa Rica's government has been considering making the move to request official membership with Petrocaribe. Such a move has raised questions among both economic and political sectors within Costa Rica.

Critics of the move have remarked that by entering Petrocaribe, the country could be risking its foreign policy regarding human rights. This is a subject for which the Maduro and Chávez governments have been seriously criticized for on an international level.

There has also been some question regarding whether Costa Rica could go into debt with the purchase of fuel using long-term loans. This could prove to be problematic as the country considers how to prevent the growth of foreign debt.

Costa Rica fuel prices are considered to be very high affecting consumer prices and President Solis promised to lower the cost of energy during his campaign.
