Head to the Quepos open- air Farmers Market – the place to go to find the freshest produce in the area for a fraction of what at it costs in the local supermarkets.
With incredible ocean views, a fantastic tropical climate and easy access to fresh natural produce – from first-hand experience I can say that living on the golden coast of Costa Rica has its advantages!

But don’t just take my word for it – my Japanese 74 year old mother has relocated to Costa Rica – she loves the warmth and friendliness of the people as well as the fact she can enjoy a healthy diet without expense.
I live in Dominical – just 30 minutes south of Quepos – the good quality roads make this an enjoyable weekend trip for my family and I. We can stock up on the fresh fruit and vegetables we need whilst also taking the opportunity to visit the award winning Manuel Antonio National Park or the Pez Vela Marina in Quepos.
Taking a look back in Quepos town’s history reveals that this was one of the headquarters for the United Fruit Company – which set up banana production in the 1930’s and continued for several decades before the increase in production of African palm oil – which is used in margarine and soap. As you drive along the coast and pass by Parrita – you’ll notice that the highway is lined by African Palm tree plantations.

Positioned on the boardwalk with the ocean as a backdrop, the Quepos Farmers Market is open on Friday evening and Saturday all day – I recommend getting there early so you get the best pick of the crop.
- Make sure you take some strong bags with good handles – so you can fill them with the fruits and vegetables you buy.
- It’s a great place to go to mingle with the community – and there are some fantastic photo opportunities.
